OFAC Expands Sanctions Against Crypto Exchanges Linked to Iran
The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on two cryptocurrency exchanges and associated entities for facilitating transactions linked to Iran's regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

On August 7, OFAC announced sanctions targeting two crypto platforms and related structures that were used to move funds in support of Iran's government and IRGC interests. The sanctions included blocking addresses associated with IRGC and freezing large amounts of cryptocurrency. The U.S. Treasury stated that these platforms were instrumental in concealing the origin of funds and circumventing existing sanctions. Specifically, over $1 million was transferred to Shelbit Exchange, and more than $2 million was sent in the opposite direction, highlighting the scale of illicit activity. These measures aim to tighten control over crypto transactions linked to sanctioned entities and impose stricter compliance requirements on exchanges and wallet providers to enhance transparency and adherence to sanctions rules.
The sanctions expand U.S. regulatory efforts to monitor and restrict crypto activities associated with sanctioned Iranian entities, emphasizing increased oversight and compliance obligations for crypto service providers.
