Over 3,000 Lawsuits Against Major Social Media Companies Allowed to Proceed

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in the United States has ruled that lawsuits against Meta, Google, TikTok, and Snap related to their platform designs can proceed. The plaintiffs accuse these companies of intentionally using design features to create dependency among underage users. The companies had sought protection under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, claiming immunity from such lawsuits. However, the court determined that this law does not automatically shield them from liability in these cases. This decision opens the possibility for the platforms to face penalties, demands for functional changes, and increased legal costs. Additionally, the court rejected Meta's request to delay a separate lawsuit filed by 29 state attorneys general.
