Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, announced a $20 million investment in Mercado Bitcoin, a leading Brazilian financial platform that has evolved from a cryptocurrency exchange into a comprehensive on-chain financial services provider. Founded in 2013 in São Paulo, Mercado Bitcoin now serves 4.5 million users and has issued over 2 billion reais in tokenized assets. The company holds more than ten licenses across Brazil and Europe, including a payment institution license from Brazil’s central bank.
The investment is part of Tether’s broader strategy to back platforms that combine regulatory licensing with market scale, focusing on expanding blockchain infrastructure in high-growth regions. Mercado Bitcoin plans to use the funds to enhance its payments infrastructure, expand tokenized investment products, grow its lending and credit services, and facilitate international expansion.
Brazil is seen as a key market due to its large financial sector, high digital adoption, and progressive regulatory environment, exemplified by the country’s instant payment system, Pix. Tether’s move aligns with the trend of integrating blockchain systems into mainstream finance, especially in markets with active digital economies.
This investment signifies Tether’s ongoing efforts to extend its influence beyond issuing USDT, into the infrastructure that supports digital asset holding, investing, and transferring. It also reflects industry confidence that tokenization and stablecoins will become central to future financial systems, especially in emerging markets.
The investment is likely to accelerate the development of blockchain-based financial services in Latin America, strengthening Mercado Bitcoin's infrastructure and expanding Tether's regional footprint.
