Sberbank intends to develop a new loan product secured by cryptocurrencies such as BTC, ETH, and USDT, pending regulatory approval from the Bank of Russia.

Sberbank is exploring the possibility of offering loans collateralized with digital assets, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether (USDT). This initiative aims to enable clients to access credit without selling their crypto holdings. However, the launch of this product depends on regulatory approval from the Bank of Russia, which is expected to be granted starting September 1, 2026.
The bank's vice chairman, Anatoly Popov, announced that the development of crypto-backed lending is contingent upon the new digital currency law coming into effect on September 1. Once enacted, banks will be permitted to operate within a regulated market for digital assets.
Details regarding the specific parameters of the loans, custody requirements, and risk management measures related to crypto volatility are still under discussion. The move signals a significant step towards integrating cryptocurrencies into traditional banking services in Russia, subject to regulatory compliance.
The initiative could pave the way for broader adoption of crypto-backed financial products in Russia, contingent on regulatory approval.
