MicroStrategy sold approximately $466.7 million worth of its stock last week, directing the proceeds into cash reserves rather than purchasing more Bitcoin. According to an SEC filing, this move increased the company's dollar reserves to $3 billion. During the same period, the company did not buy or sell Bitcoin, holding steady at 843,775 BTC, which it acquired for about $63.69 billion at an average of $75,476 per coin.
Currently, with Bitcoin trading near $63,000, the value of its holdings is approximately $53 billion, resulting in unrealized paper losses of around $10.7 billion. The company's Bitcoin holdings represent about 4% of the total supply.
Market reactions were modest, with MicroStrategy's stock dropping nearly 3% in premarket trading, extending its decline for the year to 38%. Bitcoin's price also declined over the weekend to around $62,500.
This shift indicates a change in strategy for MicroStrategy, which historically focused on raising capital to buy Bitcoin. Recently, the company has been building cash reserves, partly due to new financial structures like the preferred instrument STRC, which creates fixed obligations for dividend and interest payments. These obligations require the company to maintain substantial cash reserves regardless of Bitcoin's price movements.
The company's current cash reserve of $3 billion provides a buffer for its fixed costs, allowing it to meet dividend and interest payments without selling Bitcoin. However, if market conditions worsen or Bitcoin's price drops significantly, the company might face pressure to sell its holdings.
Overall, this move reflects a strategic shift from aggressive Bitcoin accumulation to financial stability and risk management, which could influence investor perceptions and the company's future actions.
The shift from Bitcoin buying to cash accumulation may influence MicroStrategy's market behavior and investor sentiment, but the direct impact on Bitcoin's price remains uncertain.
