Metaplanet, a major Bitcoin holder in Japan, has announced a joint study with three partners to create tokenized credit products backed by Bitcoin. This initiative aims to transform Bitcoin from a simple treasury asset into a foundation for new financial instruments, specifically digital credit that pays interest daily. The project involves Metaplanet, JPYC (a yen stablecoin issuer), Progmat (a regulated tokenization platform), and Siiibo Securities, recently acquired by Metaplanet and rebranded as Metaplanet Securities.

The study will explore whether Bitcoin can serve as collateral for these new credit instruments, which would be tradable and settle around the clock, leveraging blockchain technology for transparency and efficiency. This approach addresses a gap in Japan’s debt market, which favors large corporations, leaving smaller and growth companies with limited options for raising debt. Digital credit could provide a new avenue for these companies to access funding through a system that is more flexible and accessible.

The project is part of Metaplanet’s broader strategy called Project Nova, aimed at building a Bitcoin-centric financial platform in Japan. The company holds 43,000 BTC, valued at approximately $2.47 billion, and sees Bitcoin as a key element in future financial ecosystems, not just a reserve asset.

While the initiative is still in the early stages, with many details to be determined, it signals a move towards integrating blockchain-based financial products into traditional markets. If successful, this could influence how Bitcoin is used in financial services and potentially lead to new types of digital assets and lending products in Japan.
