Bitcoin Japan, a Tokyo-based subsidiary of the publicly traded company Metaplanet, has entered into a financing agreement to start accumulating Bitcoin for its treasury. The company approved a convertible bond deal with EVO Fund, raising approximately 9.66 billion yen ($59.5 million). As part of this deal, Bitcoin Japan plans to allocate over 662 million yen (more than $4 million) for its initial Bitcoin purchase.
This move aligns with the broader trend of treasury companies buying digital assets during market downturns. Metaplanet, which has one of the largest Bitcoin holdings globally with over 43,000 coins valued at more than $2.8 billion, has seen its stock decline over 50% this year. Despite the recent market slump, Bitcoin Japan views current prices as an opportunity to expand its Bitcoin holdings.
The announcement comes amid ongoing regulatory changes in Japan, where lawmakers recently passed legislation classifying cryptocurrencies as 'financial assets,' paving the way for new products like Bitcoin ETFs. This regulatory shift is expected to take effect within a year and could influence institutional participation in the Japanese crypto market.
While the market downturn has pressured many treasury firms to sell portions of their holdings, some companies, including Bitcoin Japan, are continuing to accumulate, viewing the current environment as a strategic buying opportunity. This development underscores ongoing institutional interest in Bitcoin despite volatile market conditions.
The move indicates continued institutional interest in Bitcoin and could influence regulatory and market dynamics in Japan.
