Guilty Plea in Ohio Child Pornography Case Highlights Ongoing Law Enforcement Efforts

In Ohio, Neil R. Brown, 41, has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to charges of receiving and possessing child pornography. Brown, who worked at multiple cell phone stores in Columbus, admitted to not only receiving illegal content but also capturing nude photos and videos from customers' phones. The case was initiated after a cyber tipline report in January 2025 led authorities to investigate Brown's digital devices.

Investigators found over 75 images and videos of child sexual abuse material on Brown's cell phone, including content involving minors aged approximately 7 to 9 years old. Court documents reveal that Brown paid virtual currency through an app to receive videos depicting child sexual abuse.

Further investigation uncovered that Brown, employed by Cellular Sales, would access customers' phones without permission, searching for illicit content and capturing it on his own device. A total of 59 images and videos of Cellular Sales customers were recovered from Brown's phone.

Brown was federally charged in December 2025, with the receipt and possession of child pornography being serious federal crimes carrying potential sentences of five to 20 years and up to 20 years in prison, respectively. The case underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat child exploitation, including the use of digital evidence and virtual currencies.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to address the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program coordinates federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
