On August 30, Bitcoin Knots developer Luke Dashjr revealed plans to conduct a test transition of the Bitcoin Knots blockchain to the BLAKE2b hashing algorithm, replacing the current SHA-256d. The goal of this experiment is to establish a separate minority chain that operates independently of the main Bitcoin network, thereby reducing reliance on the main network's miners.
The test aims to evaluate the stability and functionality of the new chain under the BLAKE2b algorithm. If successful, the upcoming release 29.4.1, scheduled for September 1, could solidify this new chain as an alternative version of Bitcoin.
A critical factor for the success of this initiative is the support from the broader infrastructure ecosystem, including wallets, exchanges, and liquidity providers. Currently, support for the new chain has not been confirmed, and the hash rate disparity between the test network and the main network remains significant, posing challenges for adoption and security.
The proposed fork aims to create an independent chain with a different hashing algorithm, potentially influencing the network's security and decentralization.
