The CFTC announced a legal action against Trevor L. Vernon and his company Argent Capital Management LLC, based in Franklin, North Carolina. The complaint alleges that they operated a fraudulent commodity pool trading in equity index futures, options, and crypto assets. From March 2022 to February 2026, they reportedly solicited over $14 million from at least 60 investors. The defendants falsely claimed Vernon was a successful trader and that the pool was highly profitable. In reality, their trading resulted in consistent losses, and they sent false performance reports to investors showing fictitious gains. They also misappropriated funds, using new investors' money to pay existing ones in a Ponzi-like scheme to hide losses. Additionally, Vernon allegedly made false statements during sworn testimony, violating multiple regulations. The CFTC seeks restitution, penalties, bans, and an injunction to prevent further violations.
This case underscores ongoing regulatory efforts to combat fraud in crypto-related investments, potentially influencing investor confidence and regulatory scrutiny.
