UThe U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration has selected Amentum to negotiate a phased lease for a large-scale AI data center and energy project at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.
The proposed development would include a 1-gigawatt AI data center paired with approximately 2 gigawatts of dedicated generation. The project is framed as a natural-gas-to-nuclear energy campus, linking high-density AI computing with purpose-built power infrastructure on a federal national-security site.
The selection matters because it illustrates the growing convergence of federal land, national-security infrastructure and dedicated electricity generation for large-scale AI computing. AI data centers require substantial, reliable power, making energy planning an increasingly central part of new computing projects.
What is confirmed is that NNSA selected Amentum to enter negotiations over a phased lease.
