OpenAI has officially announced a large-scale AI infrastructure project in Ohio, with a capacity of approximately 8 gigawatts, involving Nvidia, SB Energy, and the US Department of Energy.

USOn August 17, OpenAI confirmed a major project to establish around 8 gigawatts of AI infrastructure at the PORTS-Pike campus in Ohio. Nvidia will provide a guarantee covering risks related to leasing and electricity costs, amounting to up to $105 billion, and will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy to develop the infrastructure. Nvidia will also be the exclusive supplier of chips for the facility. The first phase, with 800 megawatts capacity, is scheduled to be operational by 2028. This initiative marks a shift in AI infrastructure funding models, as Nvidia leverages its own balance sheet to finance such projects, raising questions about the sustainability and circular nature of this financial approach.
